Jane's Walk King Township

In 2023, I launched Jane's Walk King. Jane’s Walk is an annual festival of free, community-led walking conversations inspired by Jane Jacobs. Held every May, Jane’s Walks encourage people to share stories about their neighbourhoods, discover unseen aspects of their communities, & use walking as a way to connect with their neighbours.

While many Jane's Walks are held in cities, rural communities have a lot to say about our main streets, our local buildings, parks, & the broader environment. My goal with starting a King Township Chapter was to open the opportunity for conversations about placemaking for small towns & villages.

 

In May 2023, I facilitated a successful inaugural Walking Tour event focused on local heritage, & kicked off a social media strategy for the Chapter. We had over 30 attendees & a long waitlist. In 2024,  Jane's Walk was ready for growth: a website was developed alongside a more fulsome brand strategy, & we began to host additional tours & develop partnerships across the municipality, including the Heritage & Culture Department & the Mayor's Youth Action Team (MYAT). The 2024 Festival was featured on page 11 of the King Weekly Sentinel.

In 2024/2025, Jane's Walk King was successful in receiving the Enrich King Community Grant for our commitment to local community engagement. We continue to develop as an organization, attending the MYAT Youth Opportunities Fair & other events in the community.
